Setup: Tableau Connection

Tableau Cloud Setup

Connected Apps are now available as part of our public beta. Follow the steps below in section 2 to start using this easier and seamless authentication.

1. Server Setup

Follow the steps in the Tableau Connection Setup section to get connected to your Tableau Server.

2. Connected App Setup (Beta)

As of the 01-04-23 Curator release, Tableau Cloud's connected apps are now supported as a method of authentication. This means SSO is no longer required to support a seamless authentication experience for Tableau Cloud users. Follow the steps below to create a new connected app connection, or to ad an existing connected app to Curator.

Creating a connected app on Curator:

  1. Ensure you have created a connection following the steps in the "1. Server Setup" section above
  2. Navigate to that same Tableau Cloud connection, and scroll to the bottom of the page expanding the "Connected Apps" section.
  3. Save the connection to enable Connected Apps.
  4. Refresh the page and navigate to teh "Connected Apps" section again.
  5. Create a connection to your Tabelau Cloud instance by either:
    • Creating a new connection:
      • Click the "Create apps for every site" button to automatically generate a new app for your Tableau Cloud site
      • NOTE: Only one site per Tableau Cloud connection is currently supported, this site will be the one you used in the "Server Setup" section above
    • Adding an existing connection:
    • Click the "Add New Item" button
    • Fill out the form to add a new connection
    • Save the page to establish the connection

3. SSO (optional)

Dashboards loaded without using a Connected App will require a double-login from the user. The embedded dashboard will have a login box in the middle of the screen when viewing a dashboard for the first time.

Since Tableau Online does not have Trusted Tickets, you will need to implement SAML to have a single sign on system. See the SAML install instructions for more information on setting this up for your Curator portal.

Tableau has excellent documentation on connecting the Tableau Online portion to SAML systems such as Azure AD, OneLogin, PingOne, and Okta: https://onlinehelp.tableau.com/current/online/en-us/saml_config_site.htm

If you do opt for using SAML, follow the following instructions to setup correctly.

At the bottom of the Settings->Authentication page, make sure to select "Single Sign-on with SAML" as the "Default authentication". You will also want to select "Authenticate using an inline frame".

Any users that will be using Curator should be setup to have their "Authentication Type" setup as "Single sign-on with SAML" (See "Users" section).
